Jesus Christ was, is and will continue to be the fullness of God. John chapter one of God’s word, the Bible, tells us Jesus is the Son of God and that the fullness of deity dwelt in Him. This is probably the most difficult to believe truth of scripture. Sounds like blasphemy coming from a preacher I know, but there is no denying that this foundation of our faith seems pretty far-fetched to the human mind. The scripture itself even attests to the fact that humanity would have a hard time believing that Jesus is Lord. A study I have been doing on questions in the gospels has brought me to a better understanding of this. Most of the questions asked of Jesus Christ during His earthly ministry stem from unbelief, or doubt. Remember doubting Thomas? Whether you want to admit it or not, I know even the best of us struggle with doubt from time to time. It’s obvious in the way we lead our lives. Do you ever have worries? Do you ever have any anxiety? Doubt leads to a weakened faith, a weakened faith leads to a diminished joy and a diminished joy leads to a weakened walk with the Lord. Ultimately doubt leads to worry and anxiety that steals your joy. This begs the question, “How do we overcome our doubt?” and the answer is simple, “Have faith.” Keep the faith. Hold on to your faith. Cherish your faith. Love your faith. Faith is a gift that the great and mighty God of all creation has given to you. He is the king of kings, the God of all things, perfect in power and wisdom and He desires your faithful love and obedience.
Hebrew 11:1 tells us what faith is; “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” That doesn’t seem to leave any room for our doubts does it? So does that mean that because we doubt, we have no faith? I don’t think so. Doubt may affect our faith and weaken our walk, but it can also be used by God to build us up. God will often disprove our doubts to draw us closer to Him. He does this so that you will believe, and that your faith will become stronger. Mark chapter 9 verses 17-29 gives an account of Jesus Christ healing a boy who was possessed by a spirit. What the father of that boy says is a picture of our true nature when it comes to our doubts and having genuine faith. Mark 9:21-24 (New International Version)
21Jesus asked the boy's father, "How long has he been like this?"
"From childhood," he answered. 22"It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us."
23" 'If you can'?" said Jesus. "Everything is possible for him who believes."
24Immediately the boy's father exclaimed, "I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!"
Every believer finds him or herself in this man’s position at one time or another. Life is full of obstacles, bumps in the road and failures. When you get down and feel defeated, it is necessary to make the same petition the boy’s father makes. The King James Version says the petition was made with tears. It is very humbling to confess our imperfections before God. Our faith is a gift from God, but we who exercise our faith are imperfect. The only way to be conquerors in Christ and overcome our doubts is to cry out to Jesus and have faith. Then we can live our lives without worry, anxiety or fear. Then we can live the joy filled lives that God had originally intended for us to live. In Matthew 28:18, Jesus said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”
