Reading the Bible

Reading the Bible

We are almost finished reading through the Bible in 90 days. Actually in our case I guess it’s 97 days, but that’s OK. Some of you who read this may be reading through the Bible as well. This is an important discipline for the Christian. If you only go to a church and listen to what the preacher says, chances are you may only be getting the preacher’s perspective. Although the preacher’s sermons may be sound biblical messages and full of life applications, you are missing out if you are not practicing the discipline of reading the Bible. When you have your own personal study time in God’s word, God will reveal truths to you that you may never come to know by simply going to church and listening. Our own experiences in life also have significant weight on how we might understand some passages more personally than others. Specifically setting aside time each day to spend with God by reading and studying His word is very beneficial.
The Christian must be careful how he or she studies the scriptures. The Bible is the word of God. God has infinite knowledge and His word must be studied with care. Here are a few tips for the Christian when studying a specific passage of scripture.
  1. Take into account the person that God inspired to write the passage. There are 66 books in the Bible written by many different inspired men of God. Some of these have written several of the books in the Bible, for example Moses, Paul, Luke, and John are all inspired authors of more than one book of the Bible. Sometimes a person can understand a passage better when you take it into the context of the authors other similar writings.
  2. Take into account to whom the inspired author was writing. The Bible is God’s message to all of us, but you will gain a better understanding if you can put yourself in the very first scripture reader’s sandals.
  3. Take into account the style of writing. Some of the books in the Bible are historical, like Genesis, and Exodus; some are experiential, like the poetic books of Job and many of the Psalms; some are prophetic, like Malachi and Revelation.
  4. Take into account the historical background and surrounding culture. Times and traditions change from the beginning of creation to the coming of the Messiah.
  5. Lastly, and only lastly, take into account how the passage of scripture applies to your own life today.

The Bible is God’s love letter to you. Cherish it! Psalm 119:11 I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.

Weekly Challenge: Set aside at least one hour sometime this week and carefully read all of Psalm 119.
